How are you, friends?

Yeah! I can’t able to hear from you back, but I hope you should be fine in this pandemic situation.

I’m Vimal, OpenSource contributor at LetsGrowMore Summer of code. I would like to share what I’m doing in this quarantine.

Do these people have a point? 𝐈𝐬 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐱? Here’s what I do.

LetsGrowMore Summer of Code 2021(LGMSOC’21)

I’m always fond of being an open-source contributor. And I often used to scroll and refresh my emails, while I was doing that I found this. This made my day special !!

Yup! I’m selected for the LGMSOC’21 contribution program. My first step towards open-source development. I’m going to explain what I have learned so far in this contribution program and also I’ll tell my travel along with them. Since this was my first open-source contribution program, I have so many emotions to share.

First of all, what is LGMSOC? what do they do?
LetsGrowMore is a community of the students, for the students and by the students. It’s an online program designed to encourage student participation in open source software development under the guidance of mentors from the open-source community. If you need any additional details about LGMSOC take a look at this site letsgrowmore.in

I got your question, so firstly what is open source?
Open-Source Software is a type of software whose code is publicly available to use and modify. Open-Source Contribution involves contributing to the development or improvement of open-source software.

How did I get started and how did it go on?
My friend introduced me to this program, I don’t know even a bit of what going to happen in this program. My friend guided me and he is like a mentor for me. I really appreciate him for the way of friendship he provided. Before joining this program I have no idea about what is open source contributions and how to contribute and I even don’t know how to use GitHub as well, but the mentors, project admins and also the organizers helped me throughout the process. And I personally thank Aman Kesarwani for providing this wonderful opportunity for all the aspiring newbies to make a part of it to enhance their skills.

I learned how to code, how to think, and how to contribute to open source and also how it empowers the next generation of coders and creators. In starting I was so afraid because people around me were not much aware and familiar with open source and kinds of stuff. But Mentors gave potential to me like, “you don’t have to worry about the program, the experts in everything was once a beginner” and they train me everything from the scratch.

After all the setup, the contribution begins and I stepped into the program and researched for projects to contribute. But in the meantime, I met with some struggles, that’s not really a struggle, that’s my semester exams. You know, it’s a difficult task to take over both. So eventually I decided to focus on my exams. And after my semesters are over, I’m again stepped with a lack of confidence but I didn’t give up and spend more time with the contribution program. Honestly, finding a bug for a beginner is really hard. I faced the same problems. I looked for some beginner-friendly bugs and took myself to add some features as well.

The LGM community provides a great opportunity for aspiring programmers like me; and by contributing to various projects, developers can improve their skills and get inspiration and support from like-minded people. But most importantly, they can prove that they can build fantastic experiences that people love.

Finally, I made it !!🎉my contributions get merged.

I can’t express my feeling when my PR’s get merged :)

It feels great when hundreds or thousands use my few lines of code in their day to day life. It helps me to write cleaner code. It helps the community and my peers get to know me. It helps me to collaborate with like-minded people. The reason why I contribute to open source is for the feeling of joy, when you send a patch or a PR to an open-source project and finally, I got what I’m expected !!

And that’s the story came to an end on 10th August :(

Conclusion

I use this quarantine by translating my skills, knowledge and abilities into values to build a challenging career for me.

What’s your opinion to use this quarantine?????

Alternatively, if you want to use this time to relax, that’s fine too! Chill out, watch films, read books. Ultimately, we are remaining at home to stay safe not to undertake an expansive self-improvement process.

Happy Learning !!
